Vattenfall will establish a new dam structure at Lilla Edet power station in Göta älv. This is a comprehensive project where, with the help of Nitro Consult's expertise in blasting technology, vibration measurement, and inspections, vibrations have been kept at low levels.

The new dam structure will replace the existing dam from 1918, which is nearing the end of its lifespan. The reconstruction of the dam facility will ensure the operation of renewable hydropower for at least another 100 years. It will also be able to meet future climate changes more safely and efficiently by being ready to handle the increased water flows expected to occur more frequently.

This extensive project is divided into two phases, with phase one nearing completion and phase two expected to begin in spring 2024. The entire dam structure is expected to be ready for use by 2027.

Near Göta älv, there are residential houses, locks, and hydropower plants that the project has had to consider for the establishment of the new dam structure. The collaboration with Nitro Consult began in 2019 and initially involved conducting a risk analysis and a blasting technical PM.

The work has involved many challenges as the existing dam structure is considered sensitive since parts of it will continue to be in operation until the new dam structure is in place. This has required measures to reduce vibrations from the blasting work.

Therefore, Nitro Consult conducted a seismic survey in 2022 to develop forecasts for combined charges and vibrations before the upcoming blasting work, which then began in spring 2023.

​

With the help of continuous vibration measurement and blasting technical advice provided by Nitro Consult, the project could proceed without vibrations risking damage to residential houses, locks, or the old dam.

In spring 2024, the project will enter phase two, the final part of the dam safety improvement measures that Vattenfall has planned. In this phase, Nitro Consult will perform additional vibration measurements from planned piling and sheet piling work.
